A resident supported by leading mental health charity Response enjoyed a memorable day at Oxford City FC after being invited to attend the club’s final home fixture of the season.
Anthony Alce, 78, who lives at Iris Hayter House in Littlemore, was given the opportunity to attend the match against Chester at the MGroup Stadium. The visit included a tour of the ground and the chance to meet club staff, offering a unique behind-the-scenes experience.
Anthony, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, is one of more than 600,000 people in the UK living with the condition. He moved into Response-supported accommodation in 2020, where he receives round-the-clock care to help manage both physical and mental health challenges while maintaining independence.
Due to mobility issues, Anthony uses a wheelchair and relies on support staff to access activities outside his home. The chance to attend a live football match was therefore particularly meaningful.
“It was an amazing experience from start to finish,” said Anthony.
“Everyone was so welcoming, and it meant a lot to feel included and part of such a big matchday. The club and everyone involved were brilliant and I’m really grateful to everyone who made it happen.
“Response is vital to me, they help me with my mobility but also reduce my feelings of loneliness because I’m surrounded by likeminded and supportive people.”
The visit was made possible through the club’s player sponsorship programme, after main stand sponsor TotalQ donated the opportunity as part of its support for Oxford City defender Charlie Wiggett. Throughout the 2025–26 season, Response’s branding has been featured at home fixtures, including in matchday programmes and on the club’s website.
Response, which operates across Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, has supported individuals with mental health needs for more than 60 years. The charity currently provides supported accommodation for more than 350 adults, helping them live as independently as possible.
Andy Gate, Head of Media at Oxford City FC, said: “It was fantastic to welcome Anthony to the MGroup Stadium.
“Oxford City FC is a truly community-focused club and the work Response does to support those suffering with mental health challenges in the local community is exceptional.
“As a club it is great to be able to play a role to help and support Response with their crucial work.”
