Abingdon Drama Club will present Andrew Bovell’s acclaimed contemporary drama Things I Know To Be True this June as part of Pride Month celebrations, bringing a powerful exploration of family, identity, love and acceptance to the stage.

Tender, humorous and emotionally affecting, the production follows Bob and Fran Price, devoted parents who have spent their lives raising their four children.

As the siblings move further into adulthood and begin shaping lives of their own, the family is forced to confront difficult truths, changing expectations and the complexities of unconditional love.

Told through the perspectives of the four adult children, the play explores the challenge of defining identity beyond family expectations. Through poetic and emotionally honest storytelling, Bovell’s writing examines the beauty, tension and fragility of ordinary family life.

As part of Pride Month, Abingdon Drama Club said it was particularly proud to stage a production that thoughtfully engages with themes of gender identity and the experience of coming out as transgender within a family setting.

Rather than relying on stereotypes or sensationalism, the play approaches these themes with compassion, honesty and emotional depth, encouraging audiences to reflect on identity, acceptance and the enduring nature of love within families.

The production also explores how families respond to change and how people strive to live authentically, even when understanding can be difficult.

By staging the play during Pride Month, the club hopes to celebrate stories reflecting the diversity and complexity of modern life while creating space for empathy, reflection and meaningful conversation.

Internationally recognised for its richly developed characters and emotionally resonant storytelling, Things I Know To Be True remains one of contemporary theatre’s most compelling examinations of family relationships.

Abingdon Drama Club has promised audiences a moving and thought-provoking production that will resonate with anyone who has experienced the joy, heartbreak and complexity of family life.

Founded in 1944, Abingdon Drama Club is a registered charity dedicated to producing high-quality theatre and encouraging participation in drama within the local community.

Alongside its productions, the club also runs drama classes for young people and welcomes volunteers interested in all aspects of theatre production, both on stage and behind the scenes.

Please note: The production was rescheduled from March.
