One of Britain’s most beloved travelling circuses is returning to Oxfordshire this summer with an enchanting new production inspired by the wildlife, landscapes and storytelling traditions of the English countryside.

Giffords Circus will bring its brand-new show, Waterfield, to Stonor Park near Henley-on-Thames from 25 June to 06 July before heading to Barrington, Oxfordshire, from 09 to 20 July as part of its 2026 tour.

Now celebrating its 26th year, Giffords Circus has earned a reputation for blending traditional circus artistry with theatrical storytelling, live music and handcrafted production design. Its latest production is already attracting critical acclaim, with reviewers describing it as a “five-star spectacular” and “a truly unforgettable experience”.

Inspired by the creatures and character of rural England, Waterfield unfolds like a living storybook beside a magical riverbank. Audiences can expect a charming cast of feathered and furry characters brought to life through comedy, movement and breathtaking circus performances.

The production also celebrates the heritage of Giffords Circus itself. The show’s title was chosen by Red and Cecil, the children of founders Nell and Toti Gifford, reflecting the family spirit that continues to sit at the heart of the company.

Directed by acclaimed theatre and circus director Cal McCrystal, whose credits include One Man, Two Guvnors and Zumanity by Cirque du Soleil, Waterfield combines pastoral charm with pulse-racing spectacle.

“We’ve poured our hearts into Waterfield, creating a show full of joy, thrills and theatrical wonder,” said McCrystal. “It’s a celebration of the countryside, of tradition, and of a magical world, each performance hand-crafted, immersive, and designed to delight audiences of all ages.”

Adding to the atmosphere is an original score from long-time Musical Director James Keay, performed live by Giffords Circus’ six-piece band, The Grasshoppers. The soundtrack reimagines classic British folk and pop songs, helping transport audiences into the show’s whimsical world.

A world-class cast of performers from across the globe will bring Waterfield to life. Among the highlights is the nine-strong Ethiopian Addis Ababa Troupe, whose high-energy acrobatics, tumbling and gravity-defying human pyramids promise to leave audiences astonished.

Thrill-seekers can also look forward to the Valencia Flyers, a third-generation Colombian circus duo performing the spectacular Wheel of Death, while Italian performers Elena and Giacomo Jasters showcase extraordinary knife-throwing and crossbow artistry that demands precision, trust and nerves of steel.

The next generation of circus talent is represented by Jessica Jaster and Sonny Caveagna with a dynamic juggling act, while husband-and-wife performers Olivia and Stefan combine clowning and circus skills in a playful performance.

American aerial artists the Cienna Sisters will soar above the ring with breathtaking strap and hoop routines, while Spanish favourites Los Rivelinos return with their signature musical comedy.

No Giffords Circus production would be complete without its much-loved animal stars. This year’s show introduces Maisy the Shire horse and her miniature companion Tinkerbell the Shetland pony, led by Alice Gifford. Audience favourite Brian the goose also returns, bringing his trademark comic timing to the ring.

The immersive experience extends beyond the performance itself. Circus Sauce, Giffords Circus’ travelling restaurant, invites guests to continue the celebrations with a seasonal three-course feast created by Head Chef Eva Maddison and served family-style.

Visitors can also enjoy traditional circus treats including hot dogs, fries, popcorn, candyfloss and ice cream, alongside Mexican-inspired dishes from the Cantina Wagon. New for 2026 is The Woolpack on Wheels, a collaboration with restaurateur Daniel Chadwick and The Woolpack, serving drinks and bar snacks throughout the tour.

Production designer Takis returns to create the visual world of Waterfield, with handcrafted costumes, props and scenery produced in the barns of the Gifford family farm in the Cotswolds. Choreography, lighting and sound combine to create an immersive experience that celebrates craftsmanship, tradition and theatrical magic.

With its unique blend of world-class circus acts, live music, storytelling and countryside charm, Waterfield promises to be one of Oxfordshire’s standout family events of the summer.
