More than 120 runners raised £26,057 for Homeless Oxfordshire at this year’s Oxford Half Marathon, which took place on Sunday, 11 October.

The money could almost fund a support worker for a year, helping people experiencing homelessness across the county access the support they need to rebuild their lives.

This year’s event marked the charity’s biggest Oxford Half Marathon team to date, with a record number of participants running in support of its work.

Among those taking part was Vaughn Lawfull, who chose to run the half marathon to celebrate his 60th birthday. Having taken up running later in life, he also has a longstanding connection to the charity, having volunteered with it in 1986, when it operated as the Oxford Night Shelter.

Runners were cheered on at a dedicated Homeless Oxfordshire station in Summertown, where trustees, staff members and three canine supporters encouraged participants at the three-mile and five-mile marks.

The charity’s running team also wore specially designed tops featuring artwork created by Homeless Oxfordshire residents in collaboration with local artist Lisa Made It.

The design originated in a mural inspired by residents’ experiences and emotions. It was exhibited at an Oxford art gallery before being installed permanently in one of the charity’s houses. At its heart are the words “Never Give Up”, a message reflecting both the charity’s approach to supporting residents and the determination shown by those taking part in the race.

Liza Clothier, head of fundraising and communications at Homeless Oxfordshire, said the event demonstrated the generosity of the local community, from those cheering on runners to people donating in support of the team.

She said the charity depended on fundraising and donations to continue its work, adding that the money raised would make a difference to people experiencing homelessness.

Homeless Oxfordshire is the county’s largest provider of accommodation for people experiencing homelessness. Its work focuses on providing safety, stability and support to people whose lives have been shaped by trauma and disadvantage.

General tickets for the 2027 Oxford Half Marathon have already sold out, underlining the event’s popularity. Runners interested in supporting Homeless Oxfordshire at next year’s race can contact the charity to enquire about fundraising opportunities and any available charity places.
