Join New College Choir, accompanied by the Instruments of Time & Truth, for their annual performance featuring Parts I-III of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.

Under the direction of Robert Quinney, the choir returns after last year’s sell-out performance to deliver the first three parts of Bach’s vibrant and colorful rendition of the Christmas Story.

Don’t miss this festive celebration of music and tradition, where Sebastian Hill will take on the role of Evangelist, bringing Bach’s masterful composition to life.

Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, officially titled “Oratorio Tempore Nativitatis Christi” (Oratorio for the Time of the Nativity of Christ), is a magnificent musical composition that tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1734, it is a set of six cantatas written for performance on specific feast days during the Christmas season.

The Christmas Oratorio reflects the traditional narrative of the Nativity, incorporating biblical texts and chorales. Each cantata is designed to be performed on a different day of the Christmas season, from Christmas Day to the Feast of the Epiphany.

The composition skillfully weaves together recitatives, arias, choruses, and chorales, showcasing Bach’s mastery in creating complex and emotionally rich musical tapestries.

Bach’s Christmas Oratorio is celebrated for its uplifting and joyous character, capturing the festive spirit of the Christmas story through its intricate musical structure and sublime melodies.

It remains a cherished work in the classical choral and orchestral repertoire, frequently performed during the holiday season.
