About Bampton Christmas concert: Feliz Navidad – Christmas Music from the New World
Bampton Classical Voices
Director: Andrew Griffiths
For their annual concert in commemoration of the village’s patron Saint, Beornwald, Bampton Classical Opera presents a festive programme exploring the remarkable musical life of the New World during the seventeenth century, at the height of the Spanish Golden Age.
The Company’s vocal ensemble Bampton Classical Voices makes a welcome return to Bampton for this seasonal event, directed by Andrew Griffiths.
The centrepiece of the programme is the wonderful eight-voice Missa Joseph fili David by Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla, a Spaniard who spent much of his career working at Puebla Cathedral in Mexico.
Alongside the mass, there are performances of motets and villancicos (Spanish-language carols) by other composers who worked in the New World, including Antonio de Salazar, and the Mexican-born Francisco López Capillas and Gaspar Fernandes.

The programme is completed by works from the libraries of the great Mexican cathedrals by such Spanish masters as Victoria, Guerrero and Vivanco.
