Students from Aureus School were given a first-hand look at career opportunities in the armed forces after attending a special Royal Navy event in London focused on inspiring young women.

Year 10 students Tilly Mulvey, Antonia Pop and Ellie Swan travelled from Didcot to attend the Royal Navy International Women’s Day event during the school’s Careers Week. All three students also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme through Aureus School, which is part of GLF Schools.

Hosted aboard HMS President, the event featured talks from serving naval personnel and guest speakers from different professional backgrounds, aimed at broadening students’ understanding of future career possibilities.

Ellie Swan said: “It was fantastic to see the possible career paths within the Navy.”

According to Rob Hayden, the day also included networking opportunities with speakers and attendees.

He said: “During the day, students had talks from individuals within the Navy, and from guest speakers, including Hannah Botterman, who last year won both the Rugby World Cup and the Six Nations with England.”

“Students also had the chance to network with the speakers and other attendees.”

“The event showed the students a wide range of inspirational females within the Navy and other careers.”

School leaders say the visit formed part of wider efforts to expose students to different career pathways and raise ambitions through direct engagement with professionals.
