The National Trust’s Cliveden estate is shimmering with festive enchantment this winter as its much-loved Christmas season returns, inspired this year by the timeless wonder of The Nutcracker.

Since Saturday 15 November, visitors have been stepping into a world of twinkling lights, whimsical decorations, and magical moments that bring the spirit of the classic ballet to life.

The transformation begins in Cliveden’s historic gardens, where pathways are lined with arches draped in sparkling baubles and oversized candy canes. These playful displays evoke the charm and colour of the Sugar Plum Fairy’s realm, offering picture-perfect scenes at every turn.

In the Long Garden, towering Nutcracker soldiers stand proudly on guard, adding a sense of festive drama to the sweeping vistas. Meanwhile, the golden gates of the Sounding Chamber provide a breathtaking illuminated centrepiece, drawing visitors into a radiant celebration of the season.

In a first for Cliveden, the estate will extend its opening hours on Thursdays and Fridays until 19 December.

Visitors can enjoy last entry at 5.30pm, with the site remaining open until 6.00pm, allowing them to experience the gardens as dusk settles – when twinkling lights, crisp air, and quiet pathways create a particularly charming winter atmosphere.

It’s an ideal opportunity for leisurely walks, memorable family outings, and festive photo opportunities.

Seasonal flavours take centre stage this year at Clara’s Café, a cosy pop-up in the picnic area. Serving a selection of warming treats, including mulled wine, spiced hot apple, hot snacks, and indulgent festive bites, the café offers the perfect way to stay toasty during an afternoon of exploring.

Families can enjoy a range of Nutcracker-themed outdoor games along Ilex Grove, alongside dedicated festive selfie spots designed to capture joyful moments. Adding to the atmosphere, the Sounding Chamber will once again ring with the sound of Christmas carols.

School choirs and local youth groups will perform a programme of cherished festive favourites on selected dates between 26 November and 11 December, filling the chamber with uplifting harmonies.

With its blend of storytelling, seasonal beauty, and family-friendly activities, Christmas at Cliveden promises a magical escape for visitors of all ages. Whether seeking a festive day out, a dose of winter nostalgia, or simply a moment of wonder, the estate invites guests to celebrate the season in spectacular style.
