Regional law firm Gardner Leader has announced that it has achieved B Corp Certification, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to environmental and social responsibility (ESR) and reinforcing its ambition to operate as a purpose-driven business.
The certification places Gardner Leader among a growing global community of businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. The UK is home to more than 2,700 certified B Corps, including around 40 law firms, making it the largest B Corp community in the world.
The achievement follows a period of sustained growth for the firm. Over the past five years, Gardner Leader has expanded across the south of England with offices in Swindon and Oxford, while increasing its workforce by 52 per cent to 211 employees. Throughout that growth, the firm says it has remained focused on employee engagement and embedding responsible business practices into its operations.
A key part of that journey has been the development of a broad programme of ESR-led initiatives, overseen by Environmental and Social Responsibility Manager Chris Dale. The firm has strengthened partnerships with like-minded organisations, including Oxford-based sustainable printer Seacourt and accountancy and advisory firm PKF Francis Clark, which also recently achieved B Corp status.
Derek Rodgers, Managing Partner at Gardner Leader, said:
“Becoming a B Corp marks an important milestone in our journey and forms part of a deliberate strategic shift, which aligns closely with our firm’s existing values and long-term vision. It also formalises our commitment to operating as a responsible business delivering peace of mind for our people, clients and our community.”
Achieving certification required a firm-wide effort across the five B Corp pillars of governance, workers, community, environment and customers. The framework will now help guide future improvements and measure the firm’s impact over time.
Rodgers added:
“The process has been rigorous and required real commitment from many colleagues in teams across the firm and particularly from Chris Dale. B Corp sets a higher bar for us going forward. It is not just recognition of what we’ve achieved, but a framework for how we continue to improve and the direction we are taking.”
As part of the certification process, Gardner Leader has implemented a number of changes across its business. These include updating its LLP Agreement to ensure people and planet are considered alongside commercial objectives in decision-making, and publishing an annual Impact Report to track progress against its environmental and social goals.
The firm has also expanded opportunities for employee engagement and community involvement. Every member of staff is now entitled to two paid volunteering days each year, while employee fundraising efforts for nominated charities are matched pound-for-pound by the firm.
Its Nature and Environment working group has introduced initiatives including litter-picking events, planting bee-friendly greenery and hosting educational sessions with environmental specialists.
Looking ahead, Gardner Leader is aligning its ambitions with the Better Business Act campaign, which advocates for company law to recognise people and planet alongside profit.
The firm is also working with Ecologi to measure and reduce its environmental impact, having established its baseline carbon footprint across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Plans are now in place to develop a comprehensive carbon reduction and net zero strategy.
Rodgers concluded:
“I would like to thank everyone across the firm, including Chris Dale and our Impact Team, whose commitment and hard work in guiding us through the certification process has been critical to helping us reach this point.
“We look forward to doing more and doing better as we continue on the demanding, but important journey to remain a responsible business.”
