A powerful new theatre production exploring two centuries of mental health care is coming to Oxford this summer as part of the Warneford 200 bicentenary programme.

Written by Janet Bolam, Within These Walls is a collaboration between Human Story Theatre and Oxford Health Charity, marking 200 years since the opening of Warneford Hospital in Headington.

Described as “compassionate and deeply human”, the play reflects on life inside a mental health institution, focusing on the experiences of patients, carers and the enduring importance of human connection.

The production will run for two weeks inside the hospital’s former chapel, now known as The Sanctuary, from 23 June to 04 July, before transferring to Old Fire Station for a further three performances from 10 to 12 July.

Set against the backdrop of evolving mental health care, the story follows Stu and Lucy, two patients seeking refuge from difficult personal circumstances. As they navigate questionable treatments, separation from loved ones and fragile confidence in their own mental wellbeing, the pair form an unexpected bond while confronting unsettling questions about the nature of their friendship.

Amy Enticknap, Co-founder and Creative Producer of Human Story Theatre, said: “Within These Walls reflects on the lives of those who lived within institutional walls, the people who cared for them, and the enduring healing power of human connection.

“The production offers a powerful lens on changing attitudes to mental health care, resilience, and dignity across generations.”

Every performance will be followed by a post-show discussion featuring mental health professionals, guest speakers and partner organisations, giving audiences the chance to continue the conversation around mental health and wellbeing.

All proceeds from ticket sales will support the work of Oxford Health Charity and its initiatives across mental health services in Oxfordshire.

The creative team includes director Anna Tolputt, designer Lizzy McBain and writer Janet Bolam, with contributions from Gillie Ruscombe-King.

The production forms part of Warneford 200, a year-long programme exploring the history and future of mental health care in Oxfordshire.

Since opening in 1826, the Warneford Hospital has played a significant role in the region’s healthcare landscape, with the bicentenary programme uncovering stories from patients, staff and the wider community through exhibitions, talks and creative projects.
