About St Martin’s Church, Bladon

St Martin’s Church in Bladon is a historic Church of England parish and the burial place of Sir Winston ChurchillThe original church on this site likely dates back to the 11th or 12th century, evidenced by a Norman doorway depicted in a print of the old church before its demolition in 1802.

By the early 19th century, the medieval structure had deteriorated, leading to its replacement in 1804, funded by the 4th Duke of Marlborough. In 1891, architect A.W. Blomfield undertook significant restorations, including rebuilding the chancel, restoring the nave, adding new windows, and installing pinnacles on the tower.

The churchyard of St Martin’s is renowned as the burial site of Sir Winston Churchill. Following his state funeral at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on January 30, 1965, Churchill was laid to rest in a private ceremony at Bladon, honoring his wish to be buried near his birthplace, Blenheim Palace.

His wife, Clementine, was interred beside him in 1977. The churchyard also contains the graves of other Spencer-Churchill family members, including Churchill’s parents, Lord Randolph Churchill and Jennie Jerome, his brother John, his children Diana, Randolph, Sarah, and Mary, and his son-in-law Christopher Soames
