About St Mary’s Church, Bloxham

Overview

St Mary’s Church has stood at the heart of Bloxham for almost 1,000 years, serving as a focal point for Christian worship, prayer, and community life. A welcoming parish, it invites people of all ages and backgrounds to explore the Christian faith, participate in services, or enjoy moments of stillness in a peaceful, historic setting.

Described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as “one of the grandest in the country,” St Mary’s is a Grade I listed medieval church dominating the village skyline. Its 198-foot spire can be seen from miles around, historically guiding travellers and today offering a landmark for both locals and visitors.

History & Architecture

The first written record of St Mary’s appears in a 1067 charter when William I granted the church and rectory estate to Westminster Abbey. A 12th-century Chantry Chapel was added by King Stephen, endowing fields to pay a priest to say daily masses for the soul of his mother, Adela, daughter of William I.

Most of the current building dates to the 14th century, with fragments of Norman architecture remaining. Notable highlights include the Milcombe Chapel, featuring intricate stonework by a renowned Banbury stonemason group, and the chancel, praised as one of the best-preserved designs by Victorian architect G.E. Street, who also oversaw the installation of three Morris & Burne-Jones stained glass windows.

Throughout the 20th century, alterations included the dedication of the north aisle as a War Memorial Chapel, the introduction of a nave altar, and the commissioning of the Millennium Screen at the west end of the central aisle.
