About The Ultimate Picture Palace
Introduction
The Ultimate Picture Palace on Cowley Road is Oxford’s oldest and only truly independent cinema, treasured by locals for its unique charm and vintage character. Housed in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1911, this single-screen cinema offers an intimate experience where cinema-goers can enjoy a diverse lineup of films, from the latest indie hits and classics to international and cult favourites.
Known for its red velvet seats, art deco aesthetics, and community feel, the UPP is a must-visit for film lovers looking to experience movies in a setting that feels both personal and historic. The UPP provides a carefully curated selection of films that visitors won’t find in mainstream theatres. And as a community-supported cinema, it frequently hosts special events, Q&As, and themed nights, enriching Oxford’s cultural scene.
Opening hours
The cinema is open seven days a week. The cinema and box office opens 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each film, and the Box Office closes 10 minutes after the film starts.
The cinema doesn’t show adverts, just a couple of trailers, so don’t be late as the film starts very close to the advertised time.
Getting there
Based just off Cowley Road, the Ultimate Picture Palace is easy to find. There is no off-street parking, so we recommend a car-free visit if possible. However, there are two blue badge disabled parking spaces directly opposite the cinema. The number 1 and 5 buses from Oxford city centre stop right outside and there are numerous bike parks very close by.
Food & drink
The bar inside the auditorium serves a range of snacks including ice cream from G&D, locally made brownies, pick-and-mix sweetie mix, and freshly made popcorn. There are soft drinks, hot drinks, a half-caffeinated blend of coffee made by Missing Bean, wine selected by local wine suppliers Grape Minds, and guest beers from Tap Social. The bar is only open 30 minutes before the film starts, so stock up before the lights go down.
