Oxford City Council has approved proposals by Marick Real Estate to redevelop the site of the Odeon Cinema on 38-40 George Street into a premium aparthotel to be operated by Dublin-based operator Staycity Group, under its premium Wilde brand.
With 145 rooms, a gym, a lounge and a café, the six-storey the development will be the first of its kind in Oxford’s city centre, significantly expanding the city’s overnight accommodation options and catering to the growing demand for quality lodging in the area.
The project is part of a broader initiative to revitalise the George Street area, which involves working closely with the City Council, local community members, and various stakeholders. Marick aims to engage with the community throughout the development process, ensuring that the project reflects the needs and aspirations of local residents.

A standout feature of the redevelopment will be a 400m² community space on the ground floor that is designated for community activities.
This space will be curated and managed by Makespace Oxford, a local social enterprise, ensuring that it serves as a vibrant hub for cultural and social events in the heart of the town centre. The inclusion of this community space underscores Marick’s commitment to enhancing the local area and fostering community engagement.
In addition to creating new accommodations and community facilities, Marick’s plans will also focus on improving the public realm surrounding the site.
This includes incorporating sustainable practices in both the design and construction phases, aligning with Oxford’s broader sustainability goals. The development will feature eco-friendly building materials and design elements that reduce environmental impact, contributing to a greener urban landscape.

Demolition and construction activities are set to commence in Q3 2025, with the completion of the aparthotel and community space projected for Q4 2027.
As part of the agreement with the City Council, the project will also provide apprenticeship opportunities for local residents during the construction phase of the hotel and when it is operational.
This commitment to workforce development will help equip individuals with valuable skills and experience in the hospitality sector. Additionally, Marick has pledged to pay all staff at the aparthotel the Oxford Living Wage, ensuring fair compensation for workers and supporting the local economy.
The imminent closure of the Odeon Cinema, located on the site, will leave Oxford with four cinemas: Curzon Oxford at the Westgate Centre, the Phoenix Picturehouse in Jericho, The Ultimate Picture Palace in Cowley Road and Vue at the Ozone Leisure Park.
Staycity has 45 current or contracted properties in several cities. Its premium Wilde Aparthotels includes locations in London Liverpool Street, Paddington, Aldgate Tower Bridge and Covent Garden.
