Black Oxford Untold Stories has joined forces with The Randolph Hotel, Oxford, to present an afternoon steeped in history, culture, and tradition.
Taking place on Sunday, 05 October, the event will celebrate the legacy of Alain LeRoy Locke (1885–1954), the first Black Rhodes Scholar, philosopher, and intellectual widely recognised as the architect of the Harlem Renaissance.
Locke matriculated at Hertford College in 1907 and lived on Beaumont Street, a short distance from The Randolph. Known for his refined taste and love of elegant settings, Locke would almost certainly have visited the landmark hotel during his Oxford years.
Guests will be welcomed into The Randolph’s Grand Ballroom, beneath sparkling chandeliers, for an Alice in Wonderland-inspired afternoon tea. The menu will feature freshly prepared finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and preserves, delicate pastries, and fine teas, all accompanied by soft background music.
The culinary indulgence will be paired with a captivating talk and Q&A session, offering an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations about Locke’s enduring influence. The afternoon will conclude with time to mingle and reflect in one of Oxford’s most iconic spaces.
Pamela Roberts, Founder and Director of Black Oxford Untold Stories, said:
