Oxford’s in-person meeting of Internet & Technology Addicts Anonymous (ITAA) is celebrating its fifth anniversary this November, issuing an open invitation to anyone who feels their internet or technology use may be becoming unmanageable.
The group meets every Wednesday at 6.00pm at West Oxford Community Centre, with a special anniversary meeting planned for 26 November. All who are struggling with tech-related compulsions and seeking recovery are welcome.
ITAA is a peer-led, 12-step fellowship that supports individuals dealing with compulsive online and digital behaviour.
The organisation defines internet and technology addiction as “the compulsive and harmful use of the internet, digital media, and smart devices,” noting that people may use devices for longer than intended, feel anxious when disconnected, or turn to technology to escape problems.
Its purpose is “to abstain from compulsive internet and technology use and to help others find freedom from this addiction.”
Meetings in Oxford form part of ITAA’s global network of free and anonymous sessions, accessible both in-person and online. The 12-step programme, adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous, emphasises honesty, personal accountability, support from peers, and a commitment to working “one day at a time.”
Members share experiences, participate in recovery work, and support others seeking a healthier balance with technology.
ITAA highlights common warning signs, including compulsive scrolling, losing hours online unintentionally, neglecting sleep or relationships due to screen use, and experiencing irritability or anxiety when offline.
While digital tools are embedded in everyday life—from work and study to leisure—the organisation stresses the importance of recognising when ordinary use becomes harmful.
For Oxford residents, ITAA offers a confidential, non-judgemental space for connection and recovery. The group provides access to the global schedule of online meetings, daily support, and a path for people to rebuild healthier relationships with technology.
Marking five years of continuous in-person meetings, ITAA Oxford sees its anniversary as a milestone of dedication and community support. Members emphasise that while technology addiction can be destructive, many people find long-term freedom through the fellowship’s accessible and peer-driven approach.
Details about meetings, resources and questionnaires can be found at internetaddictsanonymous.org. Oxford’s listing for in-person meetings is available on the same site.
ITAA maintains strict anonymity and asks media partners to respect members’ privacy. Researchers and journalists may attend specific open meetings, designated in purple on the online calendar.
