Botley’s new skatepark nears completion, a game-changer for local skaters

An exciting new skatepark in Botley is nearing completion and is expected to be finished by mid-March.

Located in parish council playing fields close to Matthew Arnold School, on the western edge of Oxford, the new skatepark replaces the legendary Botley Bowl, which was permanently closed following an arson attack in 2009.

Just as the original bowl was unique in its design at the time, this new skatepark features a blended bowl, the first of its kind in the UK. There is also a dedicated street section and mini ramp.

The design aims to be inclusive of all ages and abilities and offers plenty of opportunity for progression. It was the result of extensive consultation between skatepark specialist Canvas and the local community of skateboarders and parents.

The skatepark has been funded by various parties. Botley Sk8s, a local community organisation, has raised funds by organising local events. Botley and North Hinksey Parish Council have contributed funds from its Community Infrastructure Levy.

A grant of £100,000 has been awarded by the FCC Communities Foundation, who administer the Landfill Communities Fund, and £20,000 and £10,000 respectively were donated by the National Lottery Community Fund and Cumnor Parish Council. There were also several smaller donations from local businesses and individuals.

FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Cheryl Raynor FCC Communities Foundation Grant Manager said, “It’s always nice to see something we have funded nearing completion. The skateboarding community have worked hard over many years to see this reach fruition and their dedication is to be applauded, we hope the facility can be enjoyed for many years to come.

“FCC is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that benefit local communities. And this is a great example of what can be achieved.”

The Council are currently working with Canvas and the local community to organise a star-studded opening event, to celebrate the successful completion of a project which has been 15 years in the making.

This event is scheduled for Saturday 07 June, and will involve competitions, prizes, and fun for all the family.
