Oxford Bus Company, in partnership with Black Oxford Untold Stories, is celebrating Black History Month with a unique City Sightseeing Oxford tour that highlights the achievements of black scholars who have shaped academia, law, politics, and the arts.

Following the success of last year’s launch, Pamela Roberts – award-winning historian, producer, and founder of Black Oxford Untold Stories – returns this October to lead two special guided tours that bring Oxford’s untold stories vividly to life.

Each experience lasts approximately 90 minutes, beginning with an hour aboard the iconic open-top sightseeing bus featuring live bespoke commentary from Pamela, followed by a 30-minute guided walk through Oxford’s historic streets. Passengers will enjoy panoramic views while uncovering stories that challenge misconceptions about the city’s academic heritage.

Tours will take place at 1pm on Friday 10 October and Saturday 18 October, departing from City Sightseeing Oxford Stop 15 on Broad Street, opposite the History of Science Museum. Private tours can also be arranged for groups seeking a more personalised experience.

Pamela, author of Black Oxford: The Untold Stories of Oxford University’s Black Scholars, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and the Royal Historical Society. She said:

“Oxford is steeped in almost a thousand years of history, yet the stories of black scholars have often been overlooked.

“Names like Oscar Wilde or Margaret Thatcher are well known, but what about pioneers such as Christian Frederick Cole – the University of Oxford’s first black scholar and Britain’s first black barrister – or Kofoworola Ademola, Oxford’s first African woman scholar?

“It’s fantastic to return for Black History Month and share these remarkable stories in a way that’s engaging and accessible for all ages.”

Luke Marion, Managing Director at City Sightseeing Oxford, added:

“Pamela is an exceptional guide and storyteller. We’re proud to partner with her again to offer visitors a deeper understanding of Oxford’s diverse and inspiring history.”

Tickets cost £20.00 for adults, £15.00 for seniors and students, and £11.00 for children. For an additional £5.00, visitors can add a 24-hour hop-on hop-off bus ticket to explore more of the city’s landmarks.
