Oxford City Council has welcomed the decision by Cherwell District Council to approve Oxford United’s plans for a new 16,000-seat stadium on land known as The Triangle, just south of Kidlington roundabout.

The planning application was formally approved by Cherwell’s Planning Committee, paving the way for a purpose-built venue that will serve as the football club’s permanent home and deliver wider community benefits across Oxfordshire.

Councillor Susan Brown, Leader of Oxford City Council, said:

“I welcome with huge relief Cherwell District Council’s Planning Committee approval for the new stadium application.

“Oxford City Council has long supported Oxford United’s ambition to move to a new, purpose-built, modern stadium.

“Oxford United’s tenure at the Kassam Stadium is running out. It’s urgent that the plans now move forward. This decision has provided a clear pathway to the construction of a modern facility that Oxford United and its fans deserve.

“It secures the future of the club and will offer a host of economic and social benefits for the area.”

The approved development includes a 180-bedroom hotel, restaurant, conference centre, health and wellbeing space, gym, and a community plaza.

It is expected to bring significant benefits such as new job creation, improved transport links, enhanced green spaces, and increased support for local charities, sports clubs, and schools.

The announcement comes shortly after Oxford United secured a two-year extension to remain at the Kassam Stadium, allowing time for a smooth transition to their new home.

Oxford City Council says it remains committed to supporting the club and ensuring the stadium project delivers lasting benefits for fans and the wider community.
