Christ Church Picture Gallery in Oxford is set to undergo a major renovation and expansion project aimed at transforming the Grade II listed building into a modern, world-class facility while safeguarding one of the world’s most significant “small” Old Master collections.

The plans, announced by Christ Church, Oxford, will see the existing 1960s gallery carefully redeveloped to improve conservation conditions, expand public access, and enhance facilities for researchers and students.

The project has been designed to retain the architectural vision of Powell and Moya, while ensuring the building meets contemporary museum standards.

Home to around 7,000 works of art, the Christ Church Picture Gallery collection includes paintings, drawings, prints, glass, metal icons and sculpture.

Internationally recognised for its depth and quality, several pieces are considered to be of world heritage significance. However, Christ Church has acknowledged that the current building no longer provides the environmental controls, accessibility, or research infrastructure required to properly care for such a collection.

As part of the redevelopment, the gallery will close to the public, with its final day of opening scheduled for Thursday, April 30.

Preparations are already underway to decant the collection into specialist museum-grade storage, where it will be cared for by experts in fine art handling for the duration of the works.

Christ Church has also confirmed that selected key works will remain accessible to the public through loans to other major national institutions during the closure period.

The redevelopment design has been led by architect Ptolemy Dean, a noted conservation specialist whose work includes sensitive interventions in some of the UK’s most important historic buildings.

His approach is expected to balance the preservation of the gallery’s mid-century architectural character with the creation of significantly improved display and research environments.

Professor Sarah Foot, Dean of Christ Church, described the project as a long-term investment in both preservation and public engagement.

She said the renewed gallery would provide “a world-class Picture Gallery fit for the coming century and beyond”, enabling greater access to the collection, improved conditions for learning and research, and enhanced conservation standards for decades to come.

Once complete, the redevelopment is expected to reposition the gallery as a leading cultural and academic resource, strengthening its role within Oxford’s wider heritage landscape while ensuring its collection remains accessible to future generations.
