Oxfordshire libraries announce annual short story competition for 2025

Budding writers across Oxfordshire are being invited to showcase their creativity as Oxfordshire libraries open entries for their annual short story competition.

Now in its eleventh year, the county-wide contest is free to enter and aims to uncover new writers, original stories, and unique voices from the local community.

Winners will see their work published as both an ebook and eaudiobook on Oxfordshire libraries’ OverDrive platform, making it available to borrow and enjoy across the county and beyond.

The competition is open across three age categories:

  • Children: 7 – 11 years
  • Young adults: 12 – 17 years
  • Adults: 18+

Children’s entries can be up to 1,000 words, while young adults and adults can submit stories of up to 3,000 words.

Councillor Neil Fawcett, Deputy Leader of Oxfordshire County Council, said:

“The annual competition is a wonderful opportunity to inspire people of all ages to make their unique writing voice heard.

“Past winners have proven to be the most popular downloads of the year, so this is the perfect way for new writers to get their story published and enjoyed by others.”

The competition is free to enter, and entries are welcomed from Monday 08 September until the closing date of Sunday 09 November.

Full details, including terms and conditions, are available on the Oxfordshire libraries website.
