Shoryu Ramen is about to make culinary history in Oxford. On 07 October 2025, the restaurant will debut its interpretation of Jiro Ramen – Japan’s most infamous ramen bowl – at its Oxford branch for the first time.

Exclusively available until 09 November 2025, the dish joins Shoryu’s menu at locations across London, Oxford, and Manchester.

First created in Tokyo in the 1960s, Jiro Ramen has grown into a phenomenon. More than just food, it’s been described as a movement – divisive, indulgent, and impossible to ignore. Fans, who proudly call themselves Jirorians, describe it as “the ultimate ramen bowl,” while critics say it’s “too much of everything.”

At Shoryu, each bowl of Jiro Ramen (£23) comes stacked with braised kakuni pork belly, thick futomen noodles, bean sprouts, seabura (pork back fat), and minced garlic. Diners can add nitamago, a soft-boiled egg, for £2.70. Founder and Executive Chef Kanji Furukawa says:

“Jiro ramen is a guilty pleasure for me, a cult classic for Japanese. It’s so big, very messy and makes your head sweat. I hope the UK will love it as much as I do, and I’m sure our Japanese customers will be excited to see Jiro on the menu.”

Unlike the refined balance often associated with ramen, Jiro is gloriously chaotic, unapologetically huge, and designed to overwhelm in the best possible way.

To mark its UK debut, Shoryu is running the Jiro to Hero speed-eating challenge. Diners must finish the bowl in under five minutes to qualify, earning exclusive merchandise and a place on the UK leaderboard. Each month, the fastest challengers will win a year’s supply of Shoryu Ramen.

Managing Director Hannah Tokumine said:

“At Shoryu, we’re always trying to keep our dishes as authentic as possible, and we aim to tell stories with our food that transport people to Japan. Jiro ramen is one of those. It’s got so much personality, and there’s nothing else like it. Bringing it to the UK feels really special.”

Oxford diners now have the chance to experience this cult Japanese dish for themselves – but be warned, this is ramen unlike anything you’ve tried before.
