The Chequers at Berrick Salome has officially reopened under new management following an extensive refurbishment, reaffirming its reputation as one of South Oxfordshire’s most celebrated foodie pubs.

Reopening on Friday 14 November 2025, the 17th century Grade II listed brick and flint pub has been thoughtfully refreshed by experienced hospitality operator Hannah Dickson.

Nestled in the picturesque village of Berrick Salome, just five miles from Wallingford and Watlington on the edge of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Chequers blends historic charm with a warm, contemporary feel.

Inside, guests will find beautifully finished spaces designed for relaxed drinking and dining, complete with fresh flowers, candlelight and wood burners lit daily throughout the winter. In warmer months, the expansive lawned garden and raised terrace provide the perfect setting for outdoor drinks and meals.

The Chequers is the latest addition to Hannah Dickson’s boutique Copper Pubs collection, which focuses on small, characterful village inns in idyllic rural locations. Other pubs in the group include The Crown at Benson, The White Horse at Kings Sutton and The Red Lion at Ilmington.

The pub is led by general manager John Thirlway, working closely with head chef Danny Thomas to deliver a menu rooted in seasonal, locally sourced produce.

Danny brings an impressive culinary background, having trained at Reading College before working at The Roseate Reading, Gordon Ramsay’s Maze Grill in Mayfair, and The Greyhound in Henley-on-Thames, as well as heading up the kitchen at the Marriott Hotel in Bristol.

Menus at The Chequers feature elevated yet accessible modern British dishes, with daily pub classics such as fish and chips made with Brakspear’s Gravity ale batter, a changing pie, and well-considered vegetarian options.

Drinks include carefully kept local ales and ciders, curated wines and quality spirits.

Relaxed and welcoming, the pub accommodates up to 90 diners indoors, with space for around 100 more in the garden. Families and dogs are welcome, making The Chequers a true village hub for locals and visitors alike.
