Oxfordshire speciality coffee company Missing Bean is set to open its first café outside the county when it launches a new café and wine bar in Maidenhead on Thursday 08 October.
The opening will take the independent business to eight cafés and marks a new stage in its expansion after more than 17 years in and around Oxfordshire.
The new venue will occupy the ground floor of the Tempo Building at 20 Grenfell Road, directly opposite Maidenhead railway station. It will operate as a café during the day before becoming a wine bar in the evening.
Missing Bean was established in Oxford in 2009, opening its original café on Turl Street. The company subsequently developed its own East Oxford roastery and bakery and expanded its café network across Oxfordshire. Its current locations include Oxford, Abingdon, Botley, Woodstock, Charlbury and Cowley.
The Maidenhead opening is the first time the company has taken its café business into another county. Missing Bean says the town is not entirely unfamiliar territory, however, with its coffee already served by independent local businesses including Presto and Junior’s.
Coffee by day, wine by night
The Maidenhead venue will serve Missing Bean’s speciality coffee, pastries, cakes and daytime food from 7.00am on its opening day.
In the evening, the café will adopt a different format as a neighbourhood wine bar, with a drinks list and a food offering influenced by Italy and the Basque Country.
The evening menu will include small plates, cicchetti and pintxos, alongside charcuterie, cheeses and sharing boards.
The company says the venue has been designed to work across both parts of the day, with indoor and outdoor seating, tables, bar stools and window seats.
Its current information for the Maidenhead venue also highlights plans for wine and food pairings, live music nights, events and tastings.
A first move beyond Oxfordshire
For Missing Bean, the opening represents a departure from a growth strategy that has so far centred on Oxfordshire.
The company has continued to expand its local footprint in recent years, opening its Charlbury café in 2025 and its Cowley café in 2026. Its own account of the business describes Maidenhead as the next step in that expansion.
The business says delays to the Tempo Building gave its team additional time to develop the new concept before opening.

The company is also recruiting full-time and part-time baristas and bar staff for the Maidenhead venue, with roles advertised at £14.06 an hour.
The new Missing Bean Café & Wine Bar will open at 20 Grenfell Road, Maidenhead, on Thursday 08 October, with doors opening at 7.00am.
Opening hours are Monday to Wednesday, 7.00am to 9.00pm; Thursday and Friday, 7.00am to 10.00pm; Saturday, 9.00am to 10.00pm; and Sunday, 9.00am to 4.00pm.
