An award-winning Oxfordshire village pub that closed its doors has been placed on the market, marking the end of a short but high-profile revival for one of Islip’s most talked-about dining destinations.
The Swan Inn, a Cotswold stone-built gastropub in the village of Islip, officially ceased trading on 31 December 2025, with its closure only becoming widely known in early 2026. No formal reason was given for the decision.
In recent years, the pub had built a strong reputation for its elevated dining offer, earning three AA rosettes and recognition in the Michelin Guide.
Under chef patron Paul Welburn, formerly of Michelin-starred The Oxford Kitchen in Summertown, the venue became known for modern British cuisine delivered through its flagship Cygnet dining room and refined bar and lounge spaces.

Despite its accolades and strong trading figures, the business has now been listed for sale following its closure. Initially marketed with a £95,000 leasehold asking price, the figure has since been reduced to £45,000, while the freehold is available at £545,000 plus VAT.
At the time of trading, the pub reported an annual turnover of approximately £413,000, largely driven by its restaurant operations, even with limited opening hours of four days per week.
The property itself offers extensive hospitality infrastructure, including a character bar, two dining spaces seating around 50 covers, a fully equipped commercial kitchen, and a large enclosed terraced garden accommodating more than 60 guests. It also benefits from nearby community parking and a village setting just north of Oxford, close to major routes and visitor destinations such as Blenheim Palace.
Following refurbishment and reopening in 2022, the pub was positioned as a high-end dining venue with significant potential for expansion through extended opening hours and increased use of its outdoor spaces. However, trading ceased at the end of 2025, bringing an abrupt conclusion to its latest chapter.
A spokesperson confirmed the closure, thanking customers for their support and apologising for any inconvenience.
The Swan Inn’s sale now places a once-celebrated Oxfordshire gastropub back into the market at a significantly reduced entry price, raising questions about the sustainability of high-end rural dining venues in the current hospitality climate.
