Oxford Ladies Golf Club is celebrating its 125th anniversary by honouring the friendships, sporting achievements and community spirit that have defined one of Oxford’s longest-established women’s sporting organisations.
The milestone is being marked with stories from long-serving members Nesta Jones and Carol Whittle, whose combined 94 years of membership at Oxford Golf Club on Hill Top Road reflect generations of commitment to the club and the game.
Now aged 92, Nesta first took up golf in 1976 after retiring from cricket, while Carol joined in 1982. Together they have witnessed decades of change both on and off the course, while remaining passionate advocates for the sport.
Nesta said the welcoming atmosphere had been central to her long association with the club.
“It always has been a supportive club. I wouldn’t be here 50 years after playing my first round if that wasn’t the case.”
Having enjoyed playing cricket during the 1970s, she turned to golf as a way to stay active, describing the club as a major part of her social life, from competitions to regular visits to the clubhouse.
Among her fondest memories is recording her only hole-in-one during the 1980s. She still laughs about the traditional obligation to buy drinks for fellow golfers afterwards – only to discover the clubhouse bar had already closed.
“It really is wonderful we can share those jokes together decades later,” she said.
Founded in 1901, Oxford Ladies Golf Club was established to make golf more accessible and enjoyable for women. Today it continues that mission through competitions, coaching for juniors and introductory sessions designed to encourage new players.
Carol, who has served as both club captain and a director, believes golf offers benefits that extend far beyond the scorecard.
“Playing golf is a fabulous way to spend your time,” she said.
“I’ve been playing at Oxford Golf Club for 44 years, and never have I hit the same shot twice.”
She said the sport provides physical and mental wellbeing alongside opportunities to meet new people and build lasting friendships.
“The friendships made in over 40 years outweigh any achievement on the course; it’s the people who make golf special to me.”
With the club celebrating 125 years, Carol hopes the anniversary will inspire more women and girls across Oxfordshire to give golf a try.
“The 125th anniversary of Oxford Ladies Golf Club presents the perfect excuse for us to inspire the next generation of players to pick up a club. It’s social, great for your physical and mental health and, most importantly, fun.”
As the club looks to its next chapter, the anniversary celebrates not only its sporting heritage but also the friendships, inclusivity and sense of community that have kept generations of members returning to the fairways.
