Oxford’s Botley Road will reopen to traffic on Sunday 20 September 2026, bringing an end to one of the city’s most disruptive transport closures in recent years.
The reopening had originally been scheduled for the end of August, but additional work was required after three minor gas leaks were identified during excavation works linked to the new road layout.
Network Rail said the leaks were found on a section of the gas network owned by SGN, prompting safety work to replace part of the infrastructure beneath Botley Road before the route could reopen.
The additional repairs are being carried out alongside the remaining construction work connected with the redevelopment of Oxford Station and improvements to the surrounding road layout.
Apology issued over continued disruption
Tim Walden, Capital Delivery Director for Network Rail’s Great Western Route, acknowledged the impact the extended closure has had on the local community.
“We know the continued closure of Botley Road has had a significant impact on residents, businesses and everyone who relies on this route, and I’d like to apologise again for the additional disruption this has caused,” he said.
He added that teams were now focused on completing the remaining work safely and reopening the road as soon as possible.
Businesses and residents affected by prolonged closure
The closure of Botley Road has affected traffic flows across west Oxford, with commuters, residents and visitors facing diversions and longer journey times.
Local businesses along the route have also raised concerns about the impact of reduced accessibility and changes to footfall during the extended works period.
The confirmed September reopening date will provide a clearer timetable for those planning journeys into the city centre, although some construction activity linked to the wider station redevelopment is expected to continue.
Further community meetings planned
Following the announcement, additional meetings are being arranged for residents and businesses affected by the works.
A previously scheduled meeting on 19 August will go ahead, with details of the venue expected to be confirmed shortly. A further meeting will also be held in September ahead of the reopening.
