The Double Red Duke is a picturesque 17th-century coaching inn in the Cotswold village of Clanfield, close to Oxford and only minutes away from William Morris’s Kelmscott Manor.
It was was formerly the Cotswold Plough, owned by Martin and Chrissie Agius for 15 years, before the pair sold the site to focus on their gin business.
With cosy log fires, good food using local produce, and a garden with a terrace for al fresco dining, this stylish yet informal hotel is conveniently located to explore landmark Cotswolds towns and the rolling countryside.
Kelmscott Manor, the home of William Morris – the famous designer and founding figure of the Arts & Crafts Movement – is about 4 miles away. The River Thames is easy to reach. Bampton, home to Downton Abbey, is right on the doorstep. Oxford is just over a 30-minute drive away.
Sit by one of its many fires in winter or in the stunning gardens in summer. Eat, drink and stay in one of its 19 beautiful bedrooms and walk some of the most idyllic countryside around.
From 4 to 40 people in the restaurant, bar, in a private 12 seater feasting room, chef’s table, or in the Garden Room, the Double Red Duke offers plenty for a feast. We’re talking meats cured for weeks from mature, animals free to roam on the best farms and fresh seasonal fish delivered daily from the British shores all cooked over an Apple Wood Fire in the kitchen.
The The Double Red Duke has 19 elegant, comfortable and spacious en suite bedrooms with free WiFi. Some of the rooms are dog friendly, many have air conditioning. A couple of these rooms have direct access to the garden.
With a beautiful 13th century church across the field and local registry offices, The Double Red Duke can host small, exclusive weddings.
Whilst the ground floor rooms are accessible by wheelchair, it is a listed building, so floors are uneven, and there are often small steps, etc. Unfortunately, it cannot be said that the rooms have full disabled access, although they do try their best to accommodate any requirements.
The Double Red Duke in Clanfield is part of Country Creatures – a small family of restaurants, inns and hotels in the Oxfordshire Cotwolds – alongside The Swan Inn in Ascott-under-Wychwood and The Chequers Inn in Churchill near Chipping Norton.
