Abingdon Drama Club brings grunge-fuelled fairytale The Snow Queen to the Unicorn Theatre

This winter, Abingdon Drama Club invites audiences to step into a world of ice, music, and magic with The Snow Queen — a bold reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless tale.

Directed by Alexandra Jenkins and adapted by Ron Nicol, this atmospheric production runs at the Unicorn Theatre, Abingdon, from Thursday 15 to Saturday 24 January.

Far from a traditional pantomime, Jenkins’ version transforms the classic fairytale through a 1990s grunge lens — fusing the raw energy of the era with the emotional depth of Andersen’s story. Expect “velvet shadows, emotional distortion, and fierce devotion,” says Jenkins, whose direction promises to transport audiences into a dreamlike landscape of sound and spectacle.

The show features an original score of nine songs composed by Darren Fellerdale, whose soundscape underpins the drama with a haunting and immersive atmosphere.

Jenkins describes the production as “a magical, mysterious, and emotionally charged journey. We break the fourth wall, we play with the audience, and we lean into the darker truths of the story. It’s a show for the young, the old, and everyone in between.”

With a cast of more than 20 performers bringing over 30 characters to life, The Snow Queen celebrates ensemble storytelling at its finest. The production blends stunning costumes, creative stage design, and dynamic performances to create a sensory experience that’s both powerful and poignant.

Performances will be held at 7.30pm from 15 to 17 January and 21 to 24 January, with additional matinee shows at 2.30pm on Saturday 17 and 24 January. Tickets are priced at £15 (£12 concessions) and available on Abingdon Drama Club website or from The Bookstore, 15 Bury Street, Abingdon.

Founded in 1944, Abingdon Drama Club is one of Oxfordshire’s longest-running amateur theatre groups. Based in the historic Unicorn Theatre, the club stages a wide variety of productions each year—from classics and comedies to new writing and original works. With a welcoming community of local talent, ADC continues to nurture creativity, collaboration, and a passion for live performance.

For an unforgettable evening of storytelling, music, and myth, The Snow Queen at the Unicorn Theatre promises to enchant audiences of all ages.
