Oxford United Football Club has confirmed that the planning process for its proposed new stadium has reached a critical milestone, with Cherwell District Council’s planning department now in the final stages of completing its official report.
The long-anticipated development, earmarked for land at the Triangle in Kidlington, will go before the Council’s planning committee on Wednesday 31 July, where members will consider whether to approve the application.
The outcome will be pivotal for the future of the football club, which has repeatedly stressed the urgency of securing planning permission in order to meet tight project timelines and secure its long-term future.
In a statement released today, the Club said it remains in close dialogue with the Council’s planning team and is working to provide any final clarifications required to support a favourable outcome.
Jonathon Clarke, Development Director at Oxford United, expressed cautious optimism about the progress so far:
“With the recent review showing our responses are nearly complete, we can all focus on securing a positive recommendation for our plans.
We have made it very clear that meeting the July planning committee date is critical if the Club are to maintain the required timeline to secure our future.”
The proposed stadium, which would include a 16,000-seat arena along with community facilities, commercial space, and sustainable transport connections, has been in development for several years. If approved, it would mark a major step forward for the Club, which currently leases its Kassam Stadium home under terms that are set to expire in 2026.
The Triangle site, which is owned by Oxfordshire County Council, was previously the subject of a land lease agreement granted to the Club in principle, contingent on securing planning permission from Cherwell District Council.
The Club has undertaken extensive community engagement since early 2023 to refine its plans, address concerns around traffic, ecology, and design, and demonstrate how the project could benefit both supporters and the wider community.
Supporters and stakeholders across Oxfordshire have been closely following the progress of the application. Many have voiced support for the new stadium on the grounds of sustainability, economic growth, and the creation of a permanent home for the Club.
However, some local residents and environmental groups have raised objections, particularly in relation to green belt use and traffic impact.
With just over a month until the committee meeting, all eyes will now be on the final report from planning officers, which will provide a recommendation that could either support or oppose the scheme.
Oxford United has made it clear that a positive outcome is vital not only for the club’s immediate future but also for its long-term stability and ambition to grow as a community-focused, sustainably developed football institution.
