Oxford Bus Group expands free flu jab programme to protect workers amid early flu season

Oxford Bus Group has expanded its free flu vaccination programme to cover hundreds of workers across all its companies, helping protect staff ahead of what public health experts warn is an “unusually early start” to the flu season.

The initiative, which proved highly successful when first launched at Oxford Bus Company last year, is now being rolled out to colleagues at Thames Travel, Carousel Buses, Pulhams Coaches and Pearces Coaches.

The company recorded the highest take-up across the Go-Ahead Group in 2023, prompting the wider expansion.

Previously delivered on-site by a nurse from Oxford Bus Company’s occupational health department, the service has shifted to Boots to accommodate the larger workforce. Employees can now book a complimentary appointment at their nearest Boots store, making access quicker and more convenient.

While some groups are eligible for free flu vaccinations under NHS criteria, many workers do not qualify. Oxford Bus Group’s scheme ensures that all employees, regardless of their circumstances, can protect themselves without incurring the cost of private vaccination.

Luke Marion, Managing Director of Oxford Bus Group, emphasised the importance of the initiative:

“The launch of our free flu vaccine programme in Oxford last year was such a success that we’ve extended the offer to all our colleagues in the group. It demonstrates how important health and well-being is to our colleagues and we’re pleased to help.

“While certain groups can get a free flu jab through the NHS, there are members of our workforce who do not qualify. The programme helps ensure our workforce is well, that we can deliver a fantastic service this winter, and everyone can enjoy the festive period.”

Current World Health Organization estimates suggest around one billion cases of seasonal influenza occur annually, with 3 to 5 million leading to severe illness.

The UK Health Security Agency has recently reported increased influenza activity, particularly among children and young adults, highlighting the need for early protection.

Flu symptoms can include high temperature, fatigue, dry cough, sore throat, headaches, and reduced appetite. Vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce risks and transmission, especially as the virus mutates yearly.

Ioanna Prokou, Occupational Health Manager at Oxford Bus Group, added:

“This is a really important initiative, and one we are proud to build on following its successful launch last winter. We are not just protecting our colleagues and customers through this programme, but their family, friends and loved ones who might be more at risk when it comes to influenza.”

With the expanded programme now in place, Oxford Bus Group hopes to boost immunity, minimise disruptions, and support community wellbeing throughout the winter season.
