Three leisure centres in Oxford have launched a new programme designed to support people using GLP-1 weight loss medications through tailored exercise guidance and strength-based training.

Leisure Solutions Community Trust, which operates five leisure facilities on behalf of Oxford City Council, has introduced the initiative at three sites in partnership with Serco Leisure.

The programme is aimed at customers using medications such as Ozempic and Semaglutide, offering support from specially trained fitness instructors who can provide guidance on safe exercise and muscle-strengthening routines.

The initiative follows research published by ukactive and Les Mills, which highlights the importance of regular physical activity and resistance training for people taking GLP-1 medications, particularly to help maintain muscle mass during weight loss.

Each participating centre will have a fitness instructor trained specifically to support people taking these medications, with advice focused on building strength and encouraging healthy weight management.

The centres offering the programme are Barton Leisure Centre, Leys Pools & Leisure Centre and Ferry Leisure Centre.

Sarah Berne, health and wellbeing manager for Serco Leisure, said:

“With increasing numbers of people using weight loss medications, the programme aims to help customers lose weight safely while protecting muscle mass.

“While GLP-1 medications can support weight loss, exercise remains essential, and this programme ensures customers have access to qualified instructors who can help them maintain strength, confidence and overall health.”

Chewe Munkonge, cabinet member for a healthy, fairer Oxford, said:

“This new service offered by LSCT will help people using weight loss medication to stay active and reach their health goals. I am pleased that this service is available to provide extra support for those who need it.”

LSCT operates five leisure centres in Oxford through its partnership with Serco Leisure and Oxford City Council.
