The Fox Inn in Boars Hill, a dog and family-friendly pub known for its stunning views, is set to close on 9th November for a major £254,000 refurbishment under new licensee Stephen Williams, in partnership with Heineken-owned Star Pubs. The investment will revamp both the interior and exterior, creating a pub designed for all seasons.

The Fox Inn is due to reopen on 29th November, just in time for the festive season, and four new jobs are being created as part of the project. Funds will be used to upgrade the interior while preserving the pub’s historic charm.

The refurbishment includes an earthy-toned redecoration with nature-inspired feature wallpaper and upholstery, new curtains, carpets, and timber flooring, alongside an eclectic mix of traditional furniture, bric-a-brac, soft table lighting, and lantern-style pendants. The layout will feature a bar, a new private dining area, and a snug with four leather armchairs arranged around a wood burner.

Outside, the garden will undergo a complete overhaul, with new decking and turf, a joined decking and veranda to maximise the views, a pergola, timber balustrade, and contemporary wooden seating with scatter cushions. Festoon lighting, wall-mounted plants, and sleeper planters will enhance the space.

The lower garden is being cleared and turfed, with new steps leading to a long-term plan for an amphitheatre-style area for picnics, film screenings, and low-key live music. Stephen also intends to add an outdoor bar and kitchen in spring, making the most of the pub’s 150-seat garden.

Stephen, who has managed The Fox Inn on a temporary basis since July 2024, has now taken on a long-term lease. He also recently took over The Plough in Witney, the town’s oldest pub, and opened The Chequers in Weston-on-the-Green near Bicester. His previous experience includes helping establish Brets Burger, the first chargrilled burger business in Oxfordshire.

The Fox Inn’s menu will feature elevated pub classics such as beer-battered cod, surf and turf lobster and steak, and home-made pizzas using Romano bases. The new chef will also incorporate local produce into exciting seasonal dishes. A new wine list, including both new and old-world options from reasonably priced to rare vintages, will complement the menu. Four-legged friends are not being forgotten, with biscuits and water provided, and a potential dog menu under consideration depending on interest.

Says Stephen: “I have loved living at The Fox Inn and getting to know local residents, who have made me feel very welcome. It is a wonderful characterful building with jaw-dropping views. Thank you to my great team and to customers for your support this last year.

“I’m sorry that local residents won’t have somewhere to eat and drink while the pub is closed. However, it will be well worth the wait and a great early Christmas present for us all to enjoy. I am looking forward to welcoming everyone back around a roaring log fire and to raising a glass and enjoying the festive season ahead.”

Adds Matthew Stransom, Star Pubs Business Development Manager: “I am delighted that Stephen has taken on the lease of The Fox Inn. Having run the pub on a temporary basis he could see its potential and has an understanding of what customers want.

“He’s done a great job building on the pub’s reputation for food and drink, which with the latest changes, can only grow further. His plans to enhance the pub’s exterior with a new outdoor kitchen and bar will take alfresco drinking and dining to a new level. I wish him and his team well.”
