Mercure Oxford Hawkwell House has achieved a significant environmental milestone after being awarded the prestigious Green Key Award for the first time, recognising its strong commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism.
The boutique 77-bedroom hotel in Iffley received the accreditation following a rigorous process that assessed its environmental standards, documentation, and operational practices.
The Green Key programme is globally respected for its stringent criteria and is managed by the Foundation for Environmental Education, with the UK arm administered by Keep Britain Tidy.
Its accreditation is widely regarded as a benchmark for environmental excellence within the hospitality sector, highlighting those organisations that deliver high-quality guest experiences while minimising their impact on the planet.

General Manager Anuj Sagar expressed pride in the hotel’s achievement, saying: “I’m proud we have achieved this highly respected accreditation that reflects our commitment to maintaining stringent sustainability practices at the hotel.
“Sustainability is an important part of our strategy and we’re dedicated to delivering an exceptional guest experience while minimizing our impact on the environment. A big thank you goes to our team who have all helped us achieve this milestone together.”
In recent years, Hawkwell House has taken several steps to strengthen its sustainability credentials. Last year, the hotel installed electric vehicle charging points at the venue, offering guests, visitors and local residents convenient access to charging facilities.

As part of its focus on local partnerships, the hotel worked with Oxfordshire-based charging point operator EZ-Charge to deliver the infrastructure.
Beyond its environmental work, Hawkwell House continues to offer an extensive hospitality experience for guests and the local community. Its main restaurant and lounge provide all-day dining, while alfresco meals can be enjoyed year-round on the terrace.
The hotel also features three flexible event spaces suitable for weddings, meetings, parties and other celebrations.
With the festive season approaching, Hawkwell House is now taking bookings for Christmas dining and events. Guests can also enjoy Afternoon Tea or its popular Sunday Roast, both served in Frank’s Restaurant and Terrace Bar.
