This World Food Day, eat around the world in Oxfordshire

Travel may be off the table for now, but in honour of World Food Day 2020 on 16 October, we’ve rounded up some of the best global restaurants on our doorstep for you gourmands to travel to via your tastebuds.

Every year, a large number of events – from marathons and hunger marches to exhibitions, cultural performances, contests and concerts – are organised in up to 150 countries across the world to celebrate World Food Day.

However, this year’s World Food Day takes place this year in very unprecedented circumstances with countries around the world dealing with the widespread effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 global health crisis has been a time to reflect on things we truly cherish and our most basic needs. These uncertain times have made many of us rekindle our appreciation for a thing that some take for granted and many go without: high-quality food.

Food is the essence of life and the bedrock of many cultures and communities – including ours. At a time like this, it is more important than ever to recognise and support the farmers and workers throughout the food system – who are making sure that food makes its way from farm to fork – even amid disruptions caused by the pandemic.

World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honour of the date (in 1945) of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization – a specialised agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger and achieve food security for all.
